Frank van der Salm
Abstract Realities
As the title, Abstract Realities, suggests, Van der Salm’s work embodies the tension between what is real and not real, between the concrete (literally, in the case of the buildings he photographs) and abstract, and between perception and the manipulation of focus. Outfitted by a 4 by 5 camera, Van der Salm works in the spirit of a topographer, traveling extensively throughout Europe (France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, and the Netherlands) in search of “found” urban and natural landscapes.
