Arne Svenson
Sock Monkey, Sock Monkey, Sock Monkey
Sock Monkey, Sock Monkey, Sock Monkey documents the journey that began in 1985, when Ron Warren began collecting sock monkeys--those individual expressions of thrift and inventiveness that Americans for generations have stitched together from a pair of red-heel work socks. Intrigued by the obsessive nature and growing size of the collection, photographer Arne Svenson decided, with equal obsession, to document, one by one, its more than 1,800 examples. To convey the distinct personality imbued in each monkey, Svenson photographs them in the manner of classical black-and-white portraiture: lit from the front, cropped to the shoulders, eyes to the camera.
